First Year Apprenticeship Program
A 9-month intensive apprenticeship program in the classroom, garden, and field. Students will learn the essentials of herbalism in great detail, working in a healing garden, making a complete apothecary, and learning the art and science of plant medicine, botany, physiology, chemistry and more. We will learn about more than 100 plants throughout the year, working intimately with over 40 healing herbs (5 each month), while finding specific plant allies that speak more deeply and completely to us and building a closer relationship to them.
Each month we will combine lecture/intensive learning with hands-on medicine-making, growing, harvesting, plant identification, field work and theory. Outside of class, students will be expected to complete assignments including continued medicine-making, building their own materia medica, and expanding and deepening their knowledge of, and comfort with, practicing herbal medicine.
This program is designed to teach people how to use herbs intelligently, effectively and safely on a personal level. When the program is completed, participants will be able to use herbs for themselves, families and friends, but will also have a strong foundation from which to pursue a profession in the herbal realm, by becoming a practitioner or teacher, a gardener, a business owner, or by expanding an existing practice (body work, pharmacy, energy work, etc) to encompass another complementary modality.
Classes take place at The Green Wisdom School of Herbal Studies in Long Beach, and The Green Wisdom Apothecary Garden, hosted by The Carmelitos Community Garden/The Growing Experience Urban Farm, where we will be working in an herbal healing garden where you will learn about growing, harvesting and processing herbs as medicine. Additional classes will be at various venues in the Los Angeles region. In addition, there will be 1 weekend camping trip in August, and 2 day-long field trips (in Spring and Fall).
Those who successfully complete all the course requirements will receive a certificate of completion.
Classes will meet in person as well as online. There are two tracks available this year, in order to accommodate the high numbers of people who want to participate.
Weekend Track: Classes meet in person twice a month, from 10 am to 5 pm on a Saturday (usually the first Saturday of the month, with a few exceptions), and from noon to 5 pm on a Sunday (usually the third Sunday of the month, with a few exceptions), with optional (but highly encouraged) garden work days on one Saturday morning each month (usually the fourth Saturday).
There is an additional online lecture/discussion component, from 8-10 pm on Thursdays (usually the 4th Thursday).
Weekday Track: Classes meet in person twice a month, from 10 am to 4 pm on Wednesdays (usually the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays), plus the Garden work day on 4th Saturdays and the online lecture/discussion component on Thursdays (see Weekend track for details).
Both tracks will join 2nd year apprentices and select graduates for all field trips and camping trips.
